Since 1989
Hastings Little League has hosted a summer
tournament for 9 and 10 year olds
All-Star Minor teams. In 1991, the
League decided to name the tournament
in honour of a long-time friend and
member of our league.
Since then, the tournament has been known as the
Fred Ritchie Memorial Tournament.

Teams entered into the Fred
Ritchie tournament are to be "Minor" 9 & 10 year old All-Star teams. Each team will be permitted
3 players aged 9 or 10 who have
played for Major teams during the course of the season.
As is the custom
with the tournament the runner-up and the champion teams have their
Little League names and each individual player and coach’s name’s
printed on the trophies. The champion team will have a banner made by
Hastings which will fly next year on the outfield fence with all the
previous years' champions banners.
Location:
Hastings Park is
in the 3100 Block of East Hastings Street, best access from East
Pender St. in the East side of
Vancouver. Our park is directly across the street from the entrance to Playland at the PNE.

Who is Fred
Ritchie?
Frederick Joseph Ritchie was born in
Vancouver on March 19, 1928 and, after a courageous struggle with
cancer, passed away on April 21, 1991. For more than 15 years, Fred
dedicated his life to promoting and volunteering in the Hastings
Little League program.
In 1972 he became the manager of our
minor league Reds team and was chosen manager of the year in 1986.
Fred was completely committed to the 9-10 year old program and spent
his entire manager's career as a coach of 9-10 year olds.
In 1983 he became our Sponsor
Coordinator and raised thousands of dollars for the children in the
league. He worked tirelessly to ensure that our teams had enough
funding to meet their needs.
It seemed that Fred was always at the
park and everyone knew that he would be there to encourage and support
the game.
Fred became an Honorary Life Member
of the Hastings Little League Association in 1989. It is with a great
deal of respect and pride that we commemorate Fred Ritchie by naming
this tournament after him. |
