Becoming a Little League Volunteer
Why Should I Become a Volunteer?
Hastings Community Little League Baseball is an organization designed to
build good citizens. It is a program of leadership, preparing today's youth
to be tomorrow's leaders. Our League relies on a devoted legion of adult
volunteers to help ensure that the organization remains structured and runs
smoothly. We are always looking for responsible and enthusiastic individuals
to support and coordinate Little League events and activities. As a
volunteer, you should have a keen interest in the safety, well-being, and
overall development of children. By reading further, you will discover that
the benefits of volunteering are endless. You will also gain a better
understanding of why you should become involved, who volunteers are, what
you can do, and how you can sign up.
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone can apply to become a volunteer. Whatever talents or skills you have,
we can use them! Volunteers are grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles,
retirees, community leaders, former Little Leaguers, friends, neighbors, and
more. Any community member who wishes to become a volunteer may apply.
All parents of children involved in Hastings Community
Little League Baseball are strongly encouraged to volunteer. As a parent,
volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in
a safe, fun-filled environment. Oftentimes, parent and child social lives
parallel each other. Volunteering allows your life and your child's life to
intersect on common ground, with shared interests and goals.
On rare occasions, your local Board of Directors, may
deny individuals the privilege of volunteering for reasons, past or present,
that may be detrimental to the positive development of young people, other
volunteers, and/or Little League International. When you apply to become a
volunteer, you give the local Little League organization the right to
conduct necessary background checks.
How Do I Become A Volunteer?
Parents, take a minute to fill out the volunteer form while registering your
child. If you are not a parent and would like to volunteer, take a minute to
fill out the form while visiting your local registration location.
What Can I Volunteer To Do?
No experience is required to become a volunteer. Most of the volunteer
opportunities require little or no training. The best volunteers are those
who are able to bring added enjoyment to the game simply by being
themselves. What you see during Little League games is a mere fraction of
what you can do as a volunteer. You can volunteer to help in virtually any
aspect of Little League Baseball or Softball.

HASTINGS COMMUNITY LITTLE LEAGUE
ANTI-BULLYING POLICY
Hastings Little League has adopted an
anti-bullying policy. We consider that to be a range of behaviour from
verbal teasing to physical aggression and that no amount of bullying is
acceptable.
Not all joking or horseplay is bullying, but
when the intent or effect is to cause distress, repetition of such behaviour
is bullying and will not be tolerated. Physical bullying can include
pushing, hitting, or kicking a person or interfering with their property.
Verbal bullying is the use of words or gestures to hurt or humiliate another
person, including name-calling, insults and teasing.
It is the responsibility of everyone to stop
bullying. If you are being bullied, or know of someone being bullied, you
must tell your coach or a member of the Board as soon as possible.
If a person involved in the league (and this
includes players, coaches, parents and volunteers) has taken part in
bullying behaviour, a warning will be given. If the behaviour continues,
that person may be suspended or excluded from the park for up to one full
game. Any further incidents will be referred to the Board for further
action, which can include further warnings, discussions with parents,
further suspensions or exclusions, ineligibility for playoff, tournament
and/or all-star involvement, up to removal from the league.

The Parent's Pledge
·
I will remember that my child
plays sport for his or her enjoyment, not for mine.
·
I will encourage my child to
play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or
violence.
·
I will teach my child that
doing one's best is as important as winning so that my child will never feel
defeated by the outcome of a game.
·
I will never ridicule or yell
at my child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
·
I will remember that children
learn best by example. I will applaud good player performances by both my
child's team and their opponents.
·
I will not force my child to
participate in sports.
·
I will never question the
official's judgement or honesty in public.
·
I will support all efforts to
remove verbal and physical abuse from children's sporting activities.
·
I will respect and show
appreciation for the trained volunteer coaches who give their time to
provide sport activities for my child, understanding that I have a
responsibility to be part of my child's development.
·
I agree to play fair.

“Sportsmanship Isn’t Just For Athletes”
Hastings
Community Little League prides itself in providing a safe and positive
environment for all the players in the Little League. Due to some
unfortunate events involving adults during the 2006 season the Board of
Directors has developed the following Code of Conduct/Unsportsmanship
Policy.
One of the most
important things that you can do as a Little League parent or fan is show
positive support for all players and volunteers.
While many
parents are often very enthusiastic when watching their child’s games, it is
important that you do not get overly critical, such as taking personal
offense to official calls or decisions made by coaches and umpires. Most of
the time, these decisions are made in reference to official game rules that
you may not be familiar with. If you have a question about an official call
or rule, you should contact the coach after the game, or contact the
Division Co-ordinator (these phone numbers will be in the League program
handed out at the beginning of the season). These rules are enforced simply
for the safety of your child, ensuring that he/she will have a positive
Little League experience.
The Board of
Directors reserves the right to impose any of the penalties listed below if,
in its judgment, any person who displays unsportsmanlike conduct
during a game, at the game site, or at any event related to Hastings
Community Little League. The decision of the Board of Directors is final and
binding.
1) Should a person (regardless of their position in the Little League)
act in a hostile, unsportsmanlike or threatening manner they will be
reminded of this policy, asked to stop their behavior and issued a warning.
2) Should they persist they will be asked to leave the baseball park
immediately.
3) If the person refuses to leave the park the baseball game will be
halted until they do so.
4) If after 15 minutes the person continues to refuse to leave the
park the game will be cancelled with each team being awarded 1 point in the
League standings.
5) If the game is cancelled the Grievance/Protest Committee will
conduct an investigation of the incident and determine what action will be
taken with regards to the individual in question.
6) Actions could include but not be limited to one or more of the
following:
(a) A warning.
(b) A personal apology in person to the Board of Directors.
(c) If the person is a volunteer – a limited or permanent suspension of
their volunteer position.
(d) Suspension from the park for a limited length of time, the remaining
portion of the season or permanently.
(e) Suspension of the whole family from the League for a limited length
of time, the remaining portion of the season or permanently.
7) All incidents will be reported to the Grievance/Protest Committee
and kept on file.
8) In determining the actions regarding 6 (b) to (e) the
Grievance/Protest Committee will investigate the incident(s), make a
recommendation to the Executive of the Board of Directors who will vote on
the appropriate action to be taken immediately.
9) Hastings Community Little League authorizes these persons to
interact with any adult who is exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct:
·
Umpires working the game in progress.
·
Manager of the team the adult is with or, in the event the
person does not belong to either team, the Managers of both teams playing
have the authority.
·
Any Board of Director of the League in attendance. |
