PARENTS

Hastings Community Little League (HCLL) is a volunteer run organization. Managers, coaches, umpires and league officials are all volunteers. Parent participation is essential to ensuring that the baseball program is successful and registration fees are kept affordable.

Parents are expected to help with various game day duties.  These duties for each game will be assigned by your team coach or team parent.

Game Duties for Minor and Major Divisions

Parents are needed to help with:

Field Setup - get equipment out of storage, setup nets, ensure sanitizer is available

Field Cleanup - remove equipment from field, rake or drag infield (depending on location)

From time to time, parent volunteers may be needed on the field (T-Ball is 100% parent participation). Do not enter the field if you are not feeling well and ensure that you stay alert to hazards like flying baseballs and kids with bats.

Team Parent Role - The Team Parent takes the pressure off Coach by handling the bulk of communication with parents so they can focus on the kids and teaching baseball. Team Parents communicate information about league events (opening day, photos etc), fundraisers etc, distribute uniforms, send reminders about completing Health Checks etc. When games resume, they assign game day tasks (see below) and can also be the one assigning practice duties too.

1) Field Set-Up (Arrive 1 Hour before Game) - Rake and line field, setup bases, open score booth and setup speakers. Put up sponsor banners on outfield fence (first game on weekends only).

2) Scoreboard and Announce Players (Arrive 20 minutes before game).

3) Scorekeeper (Arrive 30 minutes before game).

HCLL Divisions and Age Groups
Age is defined by Little League Baseball as the player’s age as of August 31  in the year of the current or upcoming season.

Jr. T-Ball Division - 4 year old players.

T-Ball Division- 5 and 6 year old players.

Rookie Division - 7 and 8 year old players.

Minor Division - 9 and 10 year old players.

Major Division - 11 and 12 year old players.

Player Evaluations
All players aged 7 to 12 in the Rookie, Minor and Major divisions must attend player evaluation sessions prior to the start of the season. The player evaluation process has two primary goals: to place players in the appropriate division based on their abilities, skill level and safety considerations, and to facilitate a fair and equitable assignment of players to teams resulting in evenly matched teams in all divisions. The evaluation of players will be done using a 1-10 scale, with every evaluator scoring each player on their ability to field, catch, throw, and hit a ball. When all the tabulations have been completed, players are assigned to divisions based on their average scores.

It is mandatory that all players of Major, Minor, and Rookie age attend the evaluations for their age division.

The schedule for the evaluation sessions will be posted on the HCLL website once they are finalized.

There are no player evaluations for the Jr. T-Ball and T-Ball divisions.

Some players may be assigned to play in a lower division based on their skill / ability level and evaluation results. This could also be recommended for safety reasons. This could include 7 year olds playing in the T-Ball division, 9 year olds playing in the Rookie division and 11 year olds playing in the Minor division.

Some players may be invited to try out for a higher division from their age group ( 8 year olds in the Minor division and 10 year olds in the Major division) based on their initial evaluation results. In order to qualify for the higher division, they must also attend the evaluation session for the older age group and the following criteria will apply: player must have played the previous year in their age division; player must be one of the top players in their age group; there must be available spots in the higher division; must be recommended to play up and invited to try out for the higher division.

Once evaluations are completed, league officials will use the evaluation results to determine the appropriate division for each player for that season. The selection or drafting of players will then occur in early March so that teams can be set and the game schedule developed for the upcoming season.

Teammate Requests
Teammate requests for team placement are accepted in the JrTball and T-Ball divisions, but not in the Rookie, Minor and Major divisions. Sibling requests for team placement will be considered at all levels for players eligible to play within the same division.

Practice and Game Schedule
Practices usually start in early to mid March after team placements and player drafts are completed with league games running from early April to June. All Star teams are formed in mid June and play into the summer with dates varying by division. Practice schedules will be set by individual team coaches and the league game schedules will be posted on the HCLL website.

Parents Code of Conduct
Hastings Community Little League needs our parents to understand that the manner in which they conduct themselves has a direct effect on the league's ability to provide a positive experience for the children who participate. We believe that the goals of youth sports are to learn and have fun in a positive culture and ask that parents use only positive encouragement toward their child, his/her teammates, coaches, umpires, and opponents.

All parents must read and adhere to the HCLL Parents Code of Conduct. Any violations could result in parents being asked to leave the ballpark and repeat violations could also result in further disciplinary actions as determined by league officials. You can review the Parents Code of Conduct by clicking on the following link: Parents Code of Conduct.

Players Code of Conduct
Hastings Community Little League expects each of its players to follow the highest standards of sportsmanship, citizenship and courtesy at all times. This extends beyond practices, games and other league events to include time spent at the parks prior to and after games, and at other public venues. You can review the Players Code of Conduct by clicking on the following link: Players Code of Conduct.

Player Safety
The safety of all players at Hastings Community Little League is a priority for all our volunteers, coaches, umpires and parents. Please review our league safety manual which describes all our policies and rules regarding player safety. You can see the safety manual by clicking here: HCLL Safety Manual.

Equipment
All players must supply their own batting helmets, baseball pants (provided for T-Ball), baseball gloves, jocks and jills. Baseball cleats are also strongly recommended. Personal bats are allowed but HCLL policy dictates that any player bringing his/her own bat to a game or practice will either be the only player allowed to use his/her bat OR will allow every member of the team to use his/her personal bat. This addresses a league concern about team morale when personal bats are only shared between a few players.

Little League Approved Equipment
Little League International has placed restrictions on the types of bats that may be used by players. Composite-barrelled baseball bats are generally not allowed, however, some composite baseball bats have been approved. Before purchasing baseball bats, it is recommended that you check the Little League approved list here: Little League Approved Bats

Grievance Process
HCLL has a grievance process in place that can be issued by parents to address any league related issue or problem. You can review the grievance process hereHCLL Grievance Process.
