Scorekeeping Clinics

Scorekeeping Clinics

Stephen Symons - Scorekeeping Co-ordinator

ALL SCOREKEEPING CLINICS ARE ON PAUSE UNTIL WE HAVE THE GO-AHEAD FROM LITTLE LEAGUE CANADA AND LOCAL HEALTH AUTHORITIES - STAY TUNED!

Again this season, Hastings Little League is organizing scorekeeping clinics for all interested parents & guardians. We're always looking for more people to take on this important team role. Please use one of the links below to register. All sessions will be held at Hastings Community Centre. Each session will be limited to 10-12 participants so we can make sure everyone gets the attention they need. All teams need at least one scorekeeper - preferably more!

Details

  • Scorekeeping I: No previous experience as a baseball scorekeeper is required. Suggested for Parents / Guardians with:

    • Players in the Rookie division.
    • Players in the Minor and/or Major divisions, who want an introduction before Scorekeeping II.
  • Scorekeeping II: Some previous experience as a baseball scorekeeper is recommended. Suggested for Parents / Guardians with:
    • Players in the Minor and/or Major divisions.
    • And anyone who wants a refresher before the season starts.
  • Scorekeeping III: Some previous experience scoring baseball games is strongly recommended. This session will use the GameChanger scorekeeping mobile app. Suggested for:
    • Anyone new to using electronic baseball scorekeeping.
    • And anyone who wants a refresher before the season starts.
  • Practice Sessions (NEW!): Come join a few like-minded scorekeepers for a low-stress practice session. Suggested for:
    • Anyone who wants some extra hands-on experience before the season starts.
  • Mentor Program (NEW!!): Help us train the next round of Hastings scorekeepers.  Share your experience and knowledge - so you can take a break and maybe just watch a game for once! Suggested for:
    • Anyone with 2+ seasons of scorekeeping experience.

You have questions you say?

  • I'm not sure I'm qualified to be a baseball scorekeeper. How can I tell?
If you can count to three, count to four, and count to 12+ without taking off your socks, you too can be a scorekeeper! Knowing which end of a pencil to use at the appropriate time may be an asset.
  • My kid is playing Majors (or Minors) this year, and I've never done scorekeeping. What can I do?
Hmm... that depends. If you have a solid grasp of baseball rules and a couple years of Little League game experience, please contact scorekeeping@hcll.ca. Otherwise, register for Scorekeeping I, and then Scorekeeping II or a Practice Session.
  • I love using phone apps, and I've never done scorekeeping. What can I do?
Register for Scorekeeping I. The Scorekeeping III (Electronic) session will focus on how to make the transition from the paper scorebook to an electronic scorekeeping app. Baseball rules and scorekeeping practices will be covered in Scorekeeping I & II, but not in III.
  • I was scorekeeper for a game or two last season, and I felt like I was flailing the entire time. What can I do?
Definitely recommend you register for a Practice Session (new this season!). We'll find a couple convenient times & locations, and do some scorekeeping in a low-stress environment (i.e., somebody else is the official scorekeeper). These might be live games at Hastings, or pre-recorded games somewhere warm and dry. Register above to be contacted with details.
  • I've been scorekeeping baseball games since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I don't need these training clinics. What can I do?
Hastings always needs more scorekeepers! If you have some experience and feel confident as a scorekeeper, consider joining our Mentor Program (did we mention this was new this season?). We'll find a mutually convenient time & location, and pair you up with someone who might need a little help getting comfortable during their first game or two. Register above to be contacted with details.
