OUR HISTORY

Proudly serving young players in the Hastings–Sunrise community since 1953

HISTORY OF OUR LEAGUE

Old HCLL Photo.jpg

Hastings Community Little League (HCLL) was established in 1953 and is one of the oldest Little Leagues in Canada, with Little Mountain being the first, founded in 1951. As unimaginable as it may seem today, there was a time in Vancouver when baseball was more popular than hockey. Long before the Canucks joined the NHL, the city was home to a successful professional baseball team—the Vancouver Mounties—who played at Capilano Stadium (now known as Nat Bailey Stadium). In those early years, it’s easy to imagine that boys playing Little League baseball in Vancouver dreamed more of playing professional baseball than hockey. It is estimated that more than 7,000 boys and girls have played T-Ball and baseball with HCLL over the past 65 years.

The success of HCLL has been driven primarily by the dedication of countless volunteers who have generously given their time as league officials, coaches, and umpires. In addition, parents have contributed innumerable hours fulfilling team duties such as running the concession, barbecuing, field preparation, selling 50/50 tickets, and scorekeeping.

HCLL has also been fortunate to have many volunteers who continued serving long after their own children finished playing. These HCLL volunteer legends include: Morrie Rentmeester, Fred Ritchie, Scott Browning, Grace Browning, Jim Gregor, Richard Saunders, Vito Bordignon, Jack Chow, Bob Hicks, Dave Izatt, Dave Jenkins, Kerry Kilbride, James Krickan, Zoe Krickan, Evelyn Larocque, Corrina Lattimer, Egidio Pasin, Dale Weisbrod, John Wong, Roy Wydeman, Janis Trivisano, Sante DelVecchio, and Dan Wong.

Today, HCLL remains as strong as ever, with approximately 400 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 12 participating in baseball and T-Ball each year. It continues to be a well-run, volunteer-driven organization and an important sporting landmark in the Hastings–Sunrise neighbourhood of East Vancouver. As many have said over the years, spending time at the ballpark—with the sun shining, the smell of the barbecue in the air, and kids playing baseball—is a wonderful way to spend a day or early evening. The great plays and big hits are often secondary to the lifelong memories and friendships created each season.

Historic Hastings Community Park, with its spectacular views of the North Shore Mountains and Playland, has been the home of HCLL since its inception. The field and clubhouse have evolved significantly over the years, beginning with the first field renovation in 1959 and the installation of permanent fencing in 1964. The current concession building was constructed in 2001; prior to that, concessions were operated from tables, trailers, or huts.

The most significant upgrades occurred in 2015 and 2016, when HCLL raised more than $300,000—funded in large part by generous donations from the Jays Care Foundation and the PNE. These renovations included the addition of two new diamonds, along with new dugouts, a score booth, scoreboard, fencing, backstop, and irrigation system. The diamonds were named Volunteer Field and Richard Saunders Field in recognition of the league’s many volunteers and Richard Saunders’ key role in working with the Vancouver Parks Board to complete the project.

These upgrades also enabled HCLL to host the Little League Canadian Championship for the first time in August 2016, welcoming teams from across the country. The tournament drew more than 4,000 spectators to the championship game, which was won by HCLL. The new diamonds, along with the rich history of the league, stand as a lasting legacy for today’s players, their families, and future generations to come.

VOLUNTEER LEGENDS AT HCLL

Hastings Community Little League (HCLL) is a volunteer-run organization. All coaches, umpires, and league officials are volunteers, supported by parents who assist at games with field preparation, concession duties, scorekeeping, 50/50 ticket sales, and more. Together, they donate their time to provide a healthy, family-oriented baseball program for our community’s children.

While many volunteers are parents of current players, HCLL is also fortunate to have dedicated volunteers whose children have graduated, are not yet old enough to play, or who do not have children in the league. Their continued commitment allows us to maintain a high-quality program at an affordable cost for families.

We gratefully acknowledge the past and present volunteers who have devoted countless hours to our volunteer legends.
